Coloring Sand
Eliza Fegley, 2001

My two love to place colored sand into bottles and make pretty designs so I make colored sand with the powdered tempera paint I have lying about.

Needed:

White fine sand that can be bought at most hardware and gardening stores
Powdered tempera paints (Dick Blick has a large, cheap selection of these)
Small containers to mix and store the sand in, plastic containers are best IMHO

Instructions:

1. Pour white sand into each of the containers.

2. Add a spoonful or more to each container of sand. Powdered temperas can be mixed to create different colors.

3. Stir together with a stick or, as I do, put the lid on the container, if it's plastic, and shake like mad. Voila! Colored sand.

No more paying the craft store's high prices. Always buy the cheap large bags of sand. What's left over can be used to make sand beads (glue and sand mixed together), sand paintings out on the porches, and sand candles.
